Canada tops new WCF World Wheelchair Curling Ranking
February 25, 2013
Following on from a gold medal success at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship 2013, Canada has received a further accolade in sport by topping a new World Curling Federation World Wheelchair Curling ranking. Sweden lies in second place and Korea is third.
The full ranking can be seen and downloaded here: http://www.worldcurling.org/wheelchair-curling-ranking
The ranking is based on exactly the same principles as the WCF ranking for able-bodied men’s and women’s curling.
“Wheelchair Curling has come a long way since the first official world championship took place in 2002,” said World Curling Federation President Kate Caithness, “The performance of the Teams at this year’s World Wheelchair Curling Championship in Sochi, Russia, showed just how competitive the game has become. We hope that this new ranking will encourage even more WCF Member Associations to develop the discipline and grow the field of Teams participating at the World Championship qualification event.”
In the new ranking, points are assigned to WCF Member Associations according to their team’s final placing at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship, the World Wheelchair Curling Championship qualification event and the Paralympic Winter Games.
Points will only be assigned once per season to WCF Member Associations qualifying out of the qualification event for the world championship and are assigned on a percentage-scaled basis for placement at events covering six curling seasons.
Five seasons back, points count for 20%, four seasons = 30%, three seasons = 40%, two seasons = 60%, one season back counts for 80% and actual season is 100%.
At the World Wheelchair Curling Championship, Teams get the following points: 1st: 240 / 2nd: 200 / 3rd 180 until 10th: 70 points. Finishes at the Paralympic Winter Games count for double points: 1st: 480 etc.
The next WCF World Wheelchair Curling Ranking will be released following the Paralympic Winter Games. The games will take place from 7-16 March 2014 in Sochi, Russia. The Paralympic Wheelchair Curling Competition will be staged in the Ice Cube Curling Center, venue for the 2013 World Championship.
There is no World Wheelchair Curling Championship in a Paralympic Winter Games year. The next World Wheelchair Curling Qualification event is scheduled for the autumn of 2014. (Dates and venue/location: to be announced).
